Exterior House Painting: Things you need to know before Painting the Exterior of your house.

  • Irish weather can be very deterring on the exterior paint of your house, luckily, there are plenty of good exterior paints and varnishes available on the market and your house painter will know exactly what to recommend you. The only thing you have to do is to choose the right house painter.
When time comes to paint your house again follow the steps below to save you disappointment.
    Step 1:

    Choose a good House Painter.

Ring a few house painters and speak to each of them asking a few questions about house painting and the work involved when painting a house. Just from a small conversation over the phone with a painter you should be able to tell which painter is more experienced and reliable. Speaking to a painter over the phone is not enough to make up your mind. Ask for a free quotation and have the house painters that you feel are more professional come and inspect the house before giving you a price. Almost all professional painters will do this service free of charge and with no obligation so you have nothing to lose. When having the house painters in your house be sure to ask them a couple of questions regarding the painting job for your house, it is easy enough to spot a good house painter by the way he’ll answer your questions and the amount of detail he will give you. Last but not least: ask for reference! And contact the referees for information on your painter. Once happy with the references given and the conversation about painting your house: you have your trusted painter.
    Step 2

    Choose your colours.

Choosing the new paint colour for painting your house is an important step of the overall re-decorating process. There are plenty of sample house pictures on the leading paint company brochures on the market and your house painter will have a few suggestions for your house. You should choose the colour you’re most happy with considering any advice given to you by your painter or paint shop assistant. They are people in the trade and see a lot more houses being painted in their professional activity, but the last say should be yours. Your house Painter will be able to advice you on combination of colours for the walls, woodwork and facia.
    Step 3

    Choosing the right paint brand.

It is more important to choose the right paint brand for your house painting job than it is to choose the colour. Your house painter should be able to advice you on the right choice for painting your house taking into consideration the kind of surface you intend to paint. (Masonry; wood; metal...). A simple but effective way of checking which brand will work best for your house painting requirements is to do a google search on painting your house and check any blogs for other people’s experience.

    Step 4

    Scheduling the work

When painting the exterior of your house it is crucial to choose a time when the weather is good. Your house painter will have to wait until there is a dry period in weather forecast before he can book you in. Very often an exterior painting job can be delayed in the last minute because of a shift in weather. Because of the clear instructions on any paint bucket it is not possible to apply paint on wet surfaces, therefore be patient with your house painter and let him do the job right.
    Step 5

    Preparation work

Preparation! Preparation! Preparation! A good house painter will never start painting before preparing surfaces. With masonry exterior painting it is important to remove any flaky or bubbled paint from your walls. Even if not evident at first sight, old paint starts to flake and bubble over time. It is crucial to remove such paint before painting new. Often the render itself beneath the paint can be damaged and cracked. Any such defects must be rectified before painting. All holes need to be filled with exterior filler and sanded down to blend in with the original structure. Woodwork often rots under the paint which should be repaired, filled and sanded before painting. Metal structures should be checked and freed from any rust or other contaminations before painting and in case of galvanised steel or other special materials care needs to be taken to ensure the right primer is applied to avoid pealing and other undesired effects that can occur with improper application. It is vital that your house painter is aware of such requirements and he must familiarize himself with these before giving you an estimate.
    Step 6

Painting should only happen after the preparation work has been done and any masking tape needed is applied. Most surfaces require 2 coats of paint, exceptions are some metal paint which is designed to do the job in one coat. Masonry Paint is water based so it will require less time between coats and oil based paint needs longer. There are 2 options for woodwork paint: water based and solvent based, the latter being more popular. Ask your house painter for advice. One important thing a good house painter should do is not to splash about on surfaces that should not be painted. Details are the difference between a good house painter and a bad one. Once all surfaces received the appropriate number of coats your painter should clean after himself leaving you with a nicely done painting job that make your house look brand new!
